Heatmaps4Finland

Heatmaps4Finland visualizes Finnish open data as heatmaps on Google Maps

Heatmaps4Finland is a handy web application visualizing Finnish open data as heatmaps on Google Maps. Simply choose one of the available visualization types and pick a location to create a detailed heatmap for the region. If you discover something interesting, share the heatmap with your friends!

Start by taking a quick look at the introduction on SlideShare and then try it yourself! Use a desktop or laptop computer with a big screen to fully enjoy the heatmaps.

Create heatmaps with the Heatmaps4Finland application

Heatmaps4Finland is based on algorithms and data sources available via the Cloud'N'Sci.fi marketplace. Therefore, you'll be asked to login to your Cloud'N'Sci.fi user account while activating an application session (signing up is free).

Available Heatmaps

Currently, Heatmaps4Finland offers the following visualization types:

Traffic Noise Heatmaps

Use the Heatmaps4Finland application to create Traffic Noise Heatmaps

Average traffic noise levels in Helsinki visualized as a heatmap on Google Maps. Based on open data originally published by the Environment Centre of Helsinki. Heatmaps are generated with the HeatMiner visual data mining algorithm.

Traffic Accident Heatmaps

Use the Heatmaps4Finland application to create Traffic Accident Heatmaps

Traffic accident density in Helsinki visualized as a heatmap on Google Maps. Based on open data originally published by the City of Helsinki. Heatmaps are generated with the HeatMiner visual data mining algorithm.

Deer Crash Heatmaps

Use the Heatmaps4Finland application to create Deer Crash Heatmaps

Deer crash densities in Finland visualized as heatmaps on Google Maps. Based on open data originally published by the Finnish Transport Agency. Heatmaps are generated with the HeatMiner visual data mining algorithm.

Elevation Heatmaps

Use the Heatmaps4Finland application to create Elevation Heatmaps

Earth elevation visualized as heatmaps on Google Maps created with the HeatMiner visual data mining algorithm. Based on data available via the Cloud'N'Sci.fi marketplace.

Tips

Click colored areas with the right mouse button to see what that color indicates. Each heatmap uses colors for different purposes and color interpretation may depend on the selected region. For example, traffic noise heatmaps use colors to show average decibel ranges while colored areas in deer crash heatmaps are based on crash densities so that red color indicates the highest density areas within the selected region.

Heatmaps are implemented as high-quality vector graphics in a single html file so you can easily share them with your friends. Click the info button of the heatmap view to find out the public URL of the visualization. You can also save a local copy of the page to view it later.

Apps4Finland 2013

Heatmaps4Finland participated the Apps4Finland 2013 competition for applications and ideas based on Finnish open data. It was chosen as a finalist (top 5) and won the "people's choice" award in it's category. Thanks for everyone who voted!

Business from Open Data

Heatmaps4Finland is more than just an application - it's also a great opportunity to do business together! It's based on the Cloud'N'Sci.fi marketplace and the underlying business model allows also other developers and data providers to earn when somebody pays for using Heatmaps4Finland. Check the SlideShare presentations 'Heatmaps4Finland' and 'Business from Open Data' to learn more!
